WHY FIORDLAND, AND WHY US?
Fiordland National Park is New Zealand at its most dramatic. Soaring peaks, glacier-carved fiords, ancient rainforest, and rare wildlife. It’s a place that feels truly untouched.
Cruise through Doubtful Sound where waterfalls tumble hundreds of metres and dolphins, seals, and penguins thrive. Choose our signature Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruise, a fully tailored private charter, or a fishing trip designed to get you closer to the action.
On land, Fiordland is home to three of New Zealand’s Great Walks — the Milford, Kepler, and Routeburn Tracks — offering everything from short scenic strolls to world-class multi-day adventures.
No two days in Fiordland are ever the same. Wild, remote, and unforgettable. Fiordland isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience you’ll carry forever.
WHY FIORDLAND?
“FIORDLAND, LADIES AND GENTLEMAN. WHAT A SPECTACLE. EARTH DESTINATION NUMBER ONE.”
Stephen Fry (actor, broadcaster, comedian, narrator and writer)
hISTORIC FIORDLAND
Shortly after COVID-19 temporarily closed our operations in March 2020, we were approached by the Otago Early Settlers Museum to assist in recalling the historic ventures of early European explorers in Fiordland.
Our first visit, in August 2020, was to Dusky Sound, where we explored the journeys of early explorers and settlers. Captain Cook spent 32 days in Dusky Sound recovering from a long sea voyage in search of the fabled southern continent. During his time here, he charted the area and encountered some of the long-lost Ngāti Mamoe living in scattered family groups.
Soon after, sealers and whalers arrived, building New Zealand’s first house and boat in the region. Cook’s Facile Harbour saw the first shipwrecks, and conservation pioneer Richard Henry began early efforts to protect the kākāpō and kiwi on nearby Pigeon Island.
In late January 2022, we ventured further south to Preservation and Chalky Sounds, exploring the sites of early industries including gold mining, timber milling, and seal and whale hunting. Each visit has offered a fascinating glimpse into Fiordland’s rich, layered history.
